VMWare is not open source but some of its products are also available for free download (e.g., VMWare Player and VMWare Server). TurnKey Linux is designed to work well with both VMWare and VirtualBox (and other platforms).
The linux VM is MUCH better and faster, it has some limits, but it is capable of 1000 VM's / 100 hosts (don't believe the documentation that says otherwise). All future releases will only be available as VCSA which is the preferred deployment method of vCenter Server.
